American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card Review

Positioned just a step below the iconic metal Platinum Charge Card, the American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card has historically been a tough sell. For years, it was sidelined by savvy spenders due to a high annual fee and a reward structure that felt lackluster.

However, entering 2026, Amex has refined the card’s value proposition. While it still struggles with the same core “high-fee, low-base-reward” DNA, a few strategic lifestyle additions have made it a more compelling choice for a specific niche of travelers.

Here is a breakdown of what the Amex Platinum Reserve offers today:

Complimentary MembershipALL Accor+ Explorer, Taj Epicure and EazyDiner Prime membership

The Accor Plus membership is the USP of the Reserve Credit Card, as there are only very few cards that offer this membership, like Amex Platinum & Axis Reserve.

Expecting a 10 Lakh annual spend for the renewal fee waiver on the Amex Reserve feels unreasonable when you look at the benefits it offers.

Regular Spends1 MR for every 50 INR spent0.5%~ 1-2%
Fuel, Insurance, Utilities, Cash Transactions and EMI conversion at Point of SaleNILNILNIL

If you plan to use the card primarily for fuel and utilities, you may instead have a look at the Amex Gold Charge Card.

The reward rate is based on the assumption that one can get 1MR=0.50 INR easily with Marriott Points transfer but getting 1MR=1 INR isn’t easy in most circumstances.

Monthly Milestone

Spend CriteriaRewardsVoucher Type
₹50,000₹1,000 (2% value)Flipkart, BookMyShow, MakeMyTrip, Myntra, PVR Cinemas, Shoppers Stop

Note: Enrolment is mandatory to avail the benefit

  • 1 MR Point = ~0.50 INR (average taken for calculation above)
  • MR Point value can vary from 0.38 INR to 0.58 INR depending on the redemption.

While the revamped milestone benefit is better than before, life would have been much better if it was a quarterly/annual benefit. Nevertheless, it’s a good way to earn 2% return on spends that wouldn’t earn rewards otherwise, as there are so many restrictions on other bank credit cards lately.

From my experience, the monthly milestone benefit is usually fulfilled within a month after you meet the spend requirement. You then get 3 months to redeem the voucher of your choice.

Taj epicure Plus

  • 25% discount on food & beverage and Qmin
  • 20% discount on Jivas Spa & Salon
  • Complimentary celebration cake (500 gms) in birthday month
  • Happy Hours 1:1 at Taj Club Lounge, valid twice
  • And few more vouchers

Taj Epicure Plus is the customised membership by Taj Hotels for American Express cardholders and it’s slightly better compared to what we get with ICICI Emralde private (or) HSBC Premier

However, just like Accor Plus, Taj Epicure also doesn’t come with the complimentary night benefit. That said, the 20% discount on Spa and 25% off on f&b are the benefits that some Taj loyalists that I know can’t live without.

Note that you might need to order the celebration cake 1 day prior, as sometimes the hotel doesn’t have it ready the same day.

Acoor Plus Membership

Unlike the paid retail membership, it does not include the “Stay Plus” free night or the usual stack of stay and dining discount vouchers.

The Core Benefit: Dining

The primary draw here is the dining discount. While it was recently devalued from a generous 50%, you can still secure a 30% discount on dining at participating hotels. For families traveling abroad, this perk can easily save you thousands over a single trip.

  • Up to 30% off on dining across Asia Pacific
  • Accor ALL (Accor’s loyalty programme) – Silver Status
  • 20 Status Nights in Accor ALL Program to get closer to Gold or beyond
  • Upto 50% off on rooms with red hot rooms sale

Coverage & Surprises

  • Official Scope: The membership is technically limited to the Asia Pacific region.
  • The “Hidden” Reach: Interestingly, the card’s utility often extends beyond APAC boundaries. I’ve successfully used it in countries like South Africa and Egypt recently.
  • Pro Tip: Outside of Asia Pacific, acceptance seems to be hotel-specific rather than a guaranteed policy. It’s always worth presenting the card at checkout—you might get a pleasant surprise.

Rewards Redemption

There are multiple other options for redeeming the MR points on the Amex Platinum Reserve credit card on the go. These include electronics, luxury and lifestyle products, fashion accessories, and instant gift vouchers for various brands. We can even pay for transactions or book travel using MR points. The MR point value in these options is around 25p per point.

But, you can also redeem your MR points for the Platinum Travel collection or the 18/24K Gold Collection if you have the PLatinum Travel or Gold Charge/MRCC. All MR points get pooled into a single account.

Complimentary Airport Lounge Access

Access TypeAccess ViaAccess Limit
Domestic (Primary)Amex12/Year (3/Qtr)
International (Primary)Priority Pass2/Year

That aside, Amex Reserve no longer offers access to Amex Lounges in Mumbai and Delhi. Thanks to Plat Charge Cardholders who are travelling left and right, leaving no room for others to step in.

Golf Benefit

  • 2 Games per month
  • Spend Requirement: 50,000 INR (two months prior)

Spending 2 months prior, tracking it, and booking them later is not something that one can easily do.

Other Key Benefits and Charges

  • Fuel Surcharge Waiver: Not available except at HP fuel pumps valid for all transactions of value less than Rs 5000.
  • Interest Rates: 42% Annually
  • Cash Withdrawal Fees: 3.5%
  • Amex Health Insurance benefits (with ICICI Lombard)
  • 24/7 premium support

Foreign Currency Markup fee

  • Foreign Currency Markup Fee: 3.5% + GST

Reward Multiplier

Reward Rate TypeRewardsReward Rate (Cash/Credit)REWARD RATE (Marriot/Taj)
Standard Reward Rate1 MR point/Rs 50~0.5%~1%
2X Reward Rate2 MR point/Rs 50~1%~2%

You can get 2X rewards on the Reward Multiplier with Amex MRCC.

What this means is, you get 1% more reward rate on the spend. While this is not so lucrative as the 5X rewards on Gold Charge Card, it’s still decent enough to get little beyond the regular rewards.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  1. Free Taj Epicure and EazyDiner membership.
  2. It offers 12 domestic lounge visits and a Priority Pass membership.
  3. Zero liability on lost cards, free accident insurance, travel insurance, purchase protection, extended warranty, and global assist hotline.

Cons

  1. High annual fee of ₹10,000.
  2. Low reward rate of 1% to 2% compared to other premium cards.
  3. American Express network is not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard.

Final Thoughts

The revamped American Express Platinum Reserve is undeniably an upgrade over its predecessor, finding its footing as a niche “lifestyle” card. It’s a solid pick if you are a frequent guest at Accor properties or can consistently hit those monthly spend milestones. However, for the average premium user, the Amex Platinum Travel Card remains the undisputed heavyweight champion. Not only is the Platinum Travel easier on the wallet, but its milestone structure can yield over twice the reward rate compared to the Reserve.
